Time requirement: assembly 15–20 minutes, lesson 60–120 minutes

LGBTQ+ people have always been in the British Army. Share the stories of LGBTQ+ personnel past and present and explore with students what it means to be an ally today.

Winner of 'best free resource' in the 2021 Teach Secondary Awards, LGBTQ+ Voices include materials for an assembly and a lesson. Both aim to challenge perceptions, linking modern day inclusion efforts with the exclusion of the LGBTQ+ community throughout history.

The assembly profiles six LGBTQ+ service people from the First or Second World Wars, alongside reflections from current LGBTQ+ Army personnel. The lesson builds on some of these themes, providing a timeline of legislation impacting the LGBTQ+ community and case studies of four historical and current LGBTQ+ Army personnel for comparison. The final activity explores allyship, with a second video with current LGBTQ+ Army personnel used to spark discussions on how we can all be better allies to others.

The LGBTQ+ Voices resource could be used as part of your school's Pride Month activities, Remembrance Day or as part of the PSHE / Health and Wellbeing, History or Citizenship curriculums. The resource also aligns with the Gatsby Benchmarks for careers education.
