Biology and PE: Peak Performance

This 50-minute lesson, suitable for KS3 Biology and GCSE PE students, provides an engaging, real-world context for exploring exercise, nutrition and hydration. Using the inspiration of ‘Polar Preet’, an Army Officer who recently became the first woman of colour to reach the South Pole in an unsupported expedition on foot, students consider the requirements of preparing for a similar expedition.

KS3 biology students explore antagonistic muscle groups, calories, fats, protein and carbohydrate requirements, and the importance of hydration.

GCSE PE students can then also consider a Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) and the implications of an energy imbalance during the expedition.

Three ‘disruptor’ activities embed PSHE and help students to deal with the unexpected, negotiating and agreeing the best course of action as a team.
