“MY JOB INVOLVES TAKING A WIDE VARIETY OF TECHNICAL INFORMATION, ANALYSING IT AND TURNING IT INTO MEANINGFUL INTELLIGENCE. AS A LINGUIST, I CAN ALSO TRANSLATE FOREIGN LANGUAGES THAT I HAVE SPECIALISED IN."
You'll specialise in intercepting and analysing communications, working with complex, state-of-the-art computers and equipment. You'll probably learn to speak a foreign language to a high level, with the option to specialise in an area like communications or cyber warfare. You don't need a technical background and you don't have to speak any foreign languages already to apply - you'll be paid to learn on the job. You'll normally be employed in the UK, in a range of locations and environments, with some overseas deployments.

  • You do not need any prior language or technical skills to get started, we will train you to an exceptionally high standard. If you are already multi lingual, we could enhance these skills and there may be opportunities to use your languages in support of operations

Training For The Role

Step 1
You'll start with your initial military training which will teach you how to be a soldier - this will cover everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle. Your training will be at Pirbright or Winchester and last for 14 weeks.

Step 2
You'll do your Phase 2 training at the Defence Intelligence Training Group near Bedford. You will do an initial 15 weeks course inthe foundations of technical intelligence analysis. On successful completion of this course you will attempt your Junior Command and Leadership course to promote to the rank of Lance Corporal.You will then receive additional training in analysis and/or cyber skills and/or an operational language. This training will take between 3 and 18 months. If you are going on to be a linguist, you will undertake a further 18 months of intensive language training.

Entry Requirements

Age: 17 years 9 months - 35 years 6 months
Qualifications: GCSE Grade A–C/9-4 in at least English Language and four other subjects. You must have at least Numeracy Level 2.

  • Mid Thigh Pull 50kg
  • Medicine Ball Throw 2.7m
  • MSFT (beep test) level 6.6

  • Recognised Language Qualification
  • You will receive recognition in terms of pay and there is the potential that you will gain qualifications in cyber security

Rank Progression

This trade enables our skilful soldiers to become specialists, doing what they love doing and eventually paying them as Warrant Officers whilst still working as experts in their field.

Pay and Benefits

Earn £16,884 during training.

On completion of Phase 2 training you will join your unit as a Lance Corporal earning £28,351 a year.

When you go to the Assessment Centre, you'll take tests - the results will show whether you'd be suitable for this role, or should consider a different role.
